Here is a parable that shows what are the great hindrances to fully accepting the gospel. When presenting the gospel, you can expect one of these 4 responses.
This also show 3 types of people that have apparently accepted the gospel and are in our church. One day they will be separated (see verses 37-43, and 47-50).
We may at times respond in each of these 4 ways when we hear the word. Which of these 4 most typically describes how you respond to the word?
This parable shows our responsibility to disciple those who respond to the word, so they have the foundation. What do you think the different results of the last 3 are a result of, how they initially respond, or a lack of foundation through discipleship, or a combination? We have a responsibility to disciple others.
Why did Jesus speak in parables, revealing the truth to some but not others?
- The multitudes were rejecting Jesus' teaching, so Jesus didn't bother with clear picutres, except with His closest disciples. We are not to speak in the hearing of a fool, for he may mock, distort, mislead others, be wise in his own eyes, etc. See Prov 17:10, Prov 18:2, Prov 23:9, Prov 26:4, Prov 26:5, Prov 26:7, Prov 26:9, Prov 26:12, Matt 7:6.
- The parables incited curiosity and deeper thought on the part of true seekers. True sekers would dig to get the truth.
- The parables enabled Jesus to teach publicly, and yet not give His opponents evidence to use against Him. While the scribes and Pharisees were able to understand that the parables were, at times, directed against them, they could not gain from them the hard evidence they needed to dispose of Jesus (Matthew 21:45,46).
- God did not intend to keep it a secret. Nothing which was then conveyed in secret was to stay that way for long. Soon it would be proclaimed everywhere. It was just this particular audience who did not have ears to hear, and would not be given the explanation.
