Hebrews 9:22 - Additional Comments
Why did God require "blood" for forgiveness? See Lev 17:11 - "the life of a creature is in the blood". Since life is in the blood, there is no greater symbol for life than blood. Therefore, innocent blood is required to pay for guilt which results in death. Life is given to give life.
Heb 9:9 "the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper" Why didn't the sacrifices clear the consciences?
Heb 10:4 "it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins". Why couldn't an animal be sufficient?
The sacrificial system did not actually remove the guilt since it didn't remove the sin. These sacrifices were made to point to the sacrifice of Jesus that one day would take away their sins. 2 Cor 5:21 "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us." (Also, see Rom 5:18-19.) 1 Peter 3:18 - Christ died once for all (BC and AD). And through Him we have a clear conscience (1 Peter 3:21), which says we respond to God in baptism to request a clear conscience (Heb 10:22).
