1 Samuel 16:5 - Additional Comments
Samuel specifically consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them. He specifically went to their house to meet with them. It was probably a devout family. The word for consecrate means santify, set apart, dedicate.
There is no more mention of the elders (vs 4), but they were probably present when David was anointed. It sure seems they would not have ignored Samuel's invitation to the sacrifice.
This sacrifice was followed by a feast in which part of the sacrificial animal is eaten. To consecrate themselves, they had to put on clean clothes & wash themselves. Symbolically, it indicated coming before the Lord with clean hearts. This is what they would do before going to God.
Too many times we enter times of worship like we're going to place of entertainment. If we believe we are going before God in worship, we should treat it as such. How do you think God evaluates our worship services? Have the people even remotely consecrated themselves to prepare to meet with God?
