When he prayed, he didn't immediately go to God with his requests. He first acknowledged who God is. This wasn't really for God's sake, but for his, to get his heart right in prayer.
Study this prayer - it has all the elements of an ideal prayer, similar to the Model Prayer (aka Lord's Prayer - Matt 6:9-13).
